From Gutter Drunk to Guided Light: Tim’s Sobriety Journey, Spiritual Reawakening & the Birth of Sober Awakenings
When Tim realized he couldn’t pay the bills anymore, he didn’t just crunch numbers—he faced the truth. He was drinking too much. Not the occasional binge. Not just on weekends. This was 24/7, “gutter drunk” level addiction. The kind that rewires your mornings, numbs your evenings, and makes 3 a.m. anxiety attacks feel routine.
On this episode of the Sober Strong podcast, Tim takes us through the raw, nonlinear, often spiritual road to sobriety—and how that path led him to launch Sober Awakenings, a nonprofit devoted to helping others connect sobriety with spiritual growth.

Losing Control in Plain Sight: “I Was 247 Drunk”
For Tim, the spiral didn’t happen overnight. It began with the usual markers: casual college drinking, fraternity parties, Saturday morning hair-of-the-dog rituals. But by his mid-30s, drinking had become routine—and dangerous.
He describes his “gutter drunk” phase not as homeless or out of work, but as someone who physically needed alcohol in his system every few hours to function. “You’d wake up at 3 a.m. with withdrawal anxiety, take a few drinks to fall back asleep, then repeat every couple hours to stay level.”
The hardest part? No one saw it. He worked in outside sales—no desk, no daily oversight. “People just thought I was a big drinker, not someone with a serious problem.”
The High Cost of White Knuckling
Like many, Tim tried to quit before it stuck. He white-knuckled it for a year and lost 75 pounds, got a new job, and remade his image. But he didn’t deal with the emotional wreckage underneath. So the slips came. Quietly. Privately. A couple drinks here. A couple more the next day. Eventually, the downward slide accelerated—worse than before.
“I could stop at one or two drinks, sure. But the problem was that it gave my brain a permission slip. And that’s where the spiral began.”
He relapsed multiple times. What finally broke the cycle wasn’t willpower. It was his wife catching him again. This time, it ended in the ER.
ER Wake-Up Call: "Your Vitals Are Through the Roof"
Tim’s wife drove him to his parents’ house after a particularly disoriented night. He doesn’t remember much—just waking up on the couch in his parents’ basement at 40 years old. "I started bawling. I told my mom, ‘I’ve been drinking again.’"
The next morning, his doctor sent him straight to the emergency room. Elevated pulse. Dangerous blood pressure. He needed fluids, medication, and a hard reset.
That was the moment his wife said, “You’re going to AA.”
From Resistance to Recovery: The AA Chapter
Tim walked into AA with no script. “Hi, I’m Tim. I’m an alcoholic. I’m here.”
But it didn’t take right away. Like many, he went to meetings but didn’t work the steps. He didn’t explore the spiritual side of recovery. Another slip followed.
Each time, the fallout hit harder. “My wife never totally gave up on me, but she caught me every time. And every time, I had to go deeper.”
Eventually, he worked the program. The full program. Steps. Service. Spiritual work. And that’s when everything changed.
Introducing Sober Awakenings: A New Way Forward
Tim didn’t just stop drinking—he started waking up. Spiritually, emotionally, and intuitively. He launched Sober Awakenings, a nonprofit platform and podcast to connect spiritually curious people in sobriety with healing resources from all traditions.
“I’m not here to tell people what religion to follow or what’s right or wrong,” he says. “I want to offer a tent big enough for all kinds of seekers.”
Guests include yogis, meditation teachers, intuitive healers, and recovering alcoholics who’ve rebuilt their lives from the inside out.
The Tools That Helped Him Stay Sober
Beyond AA, Tim credits a set of daily tools and practices for keeping him centered and sober:
Tool Description
Meditation A daily, 10-minute practice that reconnected him to intuition and inner calm
Exercise Regular cardio, walking, and weights helped rebuild physical strength
Fasting Intermittent and extended fasts cleared brain fog and boosted mental clarity
Grounding Barefoot meditation in the yard helped reduce stress and inflammation
Reiki Energy-based therapy for pain and emotional release.
Each of these supports what he calls a “vibe upgrade”—shifting away from low-frequency behaviors and environments and into alignment with people, places, and habits that feel good.
On Vibes, Spirituality, and Reclaiming Power
Tim believes alcohol doesn’t just wreck your liver—it hijacks your power. “You have every superpower you’ve ever needed within you. But as long as you give that power to alcohol, you can’t handle what needs handling.”
This isn't about being perfect. It’s about tuning in.
Sobriety, in his view, is more than just quitting alcohol. It's learning how to listen to your intuition. How to notice energy. How to realign your life with people and places that lift you up.
And yes—how to let go of the friends and environments that don’t vibe anymore.
For Anyone Still Stuck in Addiction…
Tim’s message is simple, and it cuts deep:
“If you feel trapped in addiction, ask yourself what you’re running from. Because whatever that thing is—you already have the power inside you to handle it. But the substance you’re abusing is standing in your way. Once you let it go, your life can become better than anything you ever imagined.”
A New Way to Awaken
Sobriety isn’t the finish line—it’s the first mile of a better life. Tim’s story shows that healing isn’t linear, and it isn’t one-size-fits-all. Whether it’s a 12-step room, a morning meditation, or barefoot grounding in your backyard—what matters most is showing up for yourself.
